Gronant Dunes

The Gronant Sand Dunes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), stretch from Prestatyn to Talacre Beach and the iconic Point of Ayr lighthouse. This magnificent feature on the North Wales Coast can be accessed within just a couple of minutes walk from The Beaches Hotel, along Barkby Beach.

The Gronant Sand Dunes

Follow the Barkby Beach to the right as you leave The Beaches Hotel from the Promenade Bar and you’ll see wooden signposts leading you into the dunes. There is a beautiful decked path that stretches into the dunes and gives a wonderful elevated view of the sea and the beach below. The viewing platforms are perfect for nature lovers and visitors to enjoy the wildlife.

A preservation area and nature reserve, the Gronant Dunes support rare plants such as sea holly, marram grass and rare dune fescue and animals which include the brown hare, skylark, mining bee and sandhill rustic moth. Look out for the Natterjack Toad has been reintroduced along with Sand lizards. Between 2003 to 2006 young sand lizards, which are a larger breed, were reintroduced back at Gronant dunes after their disappearance.

Winter is an ideal time to visit Gronant dunes where bird watchers will enjoy spotting wading birds and waterfowl. Walkers and dog walkers will enjoy the stretch, the views and the variety of walking from Barkby to Talacre.
